Survey Reveals Positive Community Sports Trends in Abu Dhabi, but Room for Improvement

A recent emirate-wide survey conducted in Abu Dhabi has shed light on community sports trends, revealing that 37.3% of the 10,854 respondents met the physical activity recommendations and guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week. The Department of Community Development (DCD) in Abu Dhabi announced the survey results, highlighting that while the statistics show improvement since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Abu Dhabi government is determined to further increase the percentage in the near future using an evidence-based and holistic approach. The survey included 10,854 participants from various nationalities, age groups, and abilities, with 57% being male and 43% female.Mohamed Helal Al Balooshi, Executive Director of the Community Engagement and Sports Sector at DCD, expressed his satisfaction with the positive response from the Abu Dhabi community, emphasizing the importance of physical activity in building a stronger and more resilient emirate and country. Al Balooshi mentioned that the DCD, along with partners and stakeholders, has been working on comprehensive programs and policies to inspire people to become more active. These efforts include the creation of multi-use sports facilities at parks across the emirate, the “One Community” social cohesion campaign, collaborations with public and private groups to promote various sports such as cycling and swimming, and the launch of the Abu Dhabi 360 app to help individuals track their fitness goals and access wellness resources.According to the survey, 47.3% of respondents who engaged in regular exercise preferred walking for leisure, while 38.3% opted for jogging or running to stay fit. Cycling and swimming were also mentioned as popular activities among participants. When asked about reasons for not practicing sports or engaging in physical activity, 41.3% of respondents cited a lack of time as the main hindrance. The findings of the survey provide valuable insights into the current state of community sports in Abu Dhabi. While the percentage of individuals meeting the WHO’s physical activity recommendations is encouraging, there is still room for improvement. The Abu Dhabi government aims to continue its efforts in promoting physical activity and encouraging more residents to lead active and healthy lifestyles.By fostering partnerships, enhancing sports facilities, and raising awareness through campaigns and initiatives, Abu Dhabi seeks to create an environment that inspires and supports individuals in their pursuit of fitness and well-being. Through these collective efforts, the emirate strives to become a role model for other communities, emphasizing the importance of physical activity in overall health and happiness.
