Mohamed Alabbar: The Visionary Entrepreneur behind Dubai’s Iconic Landmarks

Dubai, UAE – Mohamed Alabbar, a renowned Emirati businessman, has left an indelible mark on Dubai’s skyline and economy through his visionary ventures. Born on November 8, 1956, in Dubai, he is the eldest of 12 children. Alabbar’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a prominent figure in the world of real estate and investment is a testament to his relentless determination and strategic acumen.

Having received a government scholarship, Alabbar pursued his studies in finance and business administration at The Albers School of Business and Economics, Seattle University, graduating in 1981 with a degree in Business Administration. His commitment to education and self-improvement is evident from the honorary doctoral degree in humanities he received from his alma mater in 2007.

Alabbar’s illustrious career commenced as a banking manager at the Central Bank of the UAE. However, his true potential shone when he returned to Dubai in 1992 to serve as the founding Director General of the Department of Economic Development (DED). During this period, he forged a strong alliance with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, and emerged as one of his chief economic advisers. Together, they played a pivotal role in transforming Dubai into a global economic powerhouse.

The crowning jewel of Alabbar’s achievements is Emaar Properties, the development firm behind iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and the sprawling Dubai Mall. These architectural marvels have propelled Dubai to international acclaim, attracting tourists and investors from all corners of the globe.

Beyond real estate, Alabbar diversified his interests, co-founding Noon.com, an e-commerce giant, and serving as the Chairman of Americana Group in the food industry. His business acumen and keen eye for opportunities have led him to chair Eagle Hills, a reputable UAE-based real estate development company.

Alabbar’s contributions extend beyond corporate boardrooms. He actively engages with educational institutions, having served on the Board of Trustees at Seattle University until 2016.
