Dana Matar: From Architect to Ultra-Running Pioneer
Dana Matar, co-founder and director of Peaks Sports, has a story that blends adventure with entrepreneurship. Her passion for the outdoors began in her childhood, and her journey from interior architecture to ultra-running is both inspiring and unique. Here’s a glimpse into a conversation with Dana about her remarkable path and the future of Peaks Sports.
Dana reminisces, “I still remember those early days in Mount Lebanon. Joining the Scouts back in 1997 was a defining moment for me. The excitement of exploring the rugged landscapes sparked my love for the outdoors. When I moved to the UAE 13 years ago, it was like discovering a new world of trails and terrains. I started running, and the beauty of the UAE’s landscapes was mesmerizing.”
She shares how this early passion evolved, “My love for ultra-running grew as I participated in various races regionally and internationally. Each race deepened my connection with the sport and my understanding of its nuances. I realized that while the UAE had stunning trails, there was a gap in organized ultra-trail races.”
Reflecting on the decision to start Peaks Sports, Dana explains, “Leaving my corporate job was a significant step, but it felt right. I wanted to merge my skills in architecture and event management with my passion for ultra-running. Peaks Sports was born out of that desire, to create a platform that not only organizes trail races but also builds a community of like-minded enthusiasts.”
Dana’s excitement about their upcoming events is palpable. “We’re gearing up for the Shawka Hump Race on November 16, 2024. It’s a fantastic opportunity for both seasoned runners and newcomers to experience the rugged beauty of Shawka. And then there’s the G.O.A.T. Ultra Race in January 2025, which will feature longer distances and more challenging routes. It’s thrilling to see how participants will embrace these new challenges.”
She highlights the effort put into making each event memorable, “Our focus is on creating an immersive experience. From meticulously planning the routes to ensuring a supportive atmosphere on race day, we aim to offer more than just a race. We want participants to connect with nature, challenge themselves, and enjoy the sense of accomplishment.”
Dana’s pride in her work shines through when she talks about the impact of Peaks Sports. “The most rewarding part is witnessing runners achieve their goals and push their limits. Seeing the joy and sense of accomplishment on their faces is what drives me. Building a community where everyone supports and motivates each other is incredibly fulfilling.”
Looking ahead, Dana is enthusiastic about the future. “We’re planning to expand our events and reach a broader audience. Our vision is for Peaks Sports to become a leading name in the global trail running community. We want to continue promoting an active lifestyle and fostering a strong community of trail enthusiasts.”
Offering advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and trail runners, Dana says, “For those interested in trail running, immerse yourself in the experience and find a community that shares your passion. For budding entrepreneurs, pursue your dreams with resilience and determination. Passion combined with hard work is the key to success.”
Dana Matar’s journey from architect to ultra-running pioneer exemplifies her dedication and love for the sport. Under her leadership, Peaks Sports is not just organizing races but cultivating a vibrant community that celebrates the spirit of adventure and personal achievement.
