Wynn Resorts Unveils Plans for UAE’s First Gaming Resort, Wynn Al Marjan Island
Wynn Resorts, a renowned US casino operator, has announced its ambitious plan to build the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) first-ever “gaming” resort. The Wynn Al Marjan Island project is set to open in four years and will cost approximately $3.9 billion. The resort aims to offer exceptional entertainment and gaming amenities, as stated on the Wynn Resorts website, while being mindful of the Islamic laws that prohibit gambling and casinos in the oil-rich Gulf state. In a recent statement, Wynn Resorts revealed that preliminary construction work has already commenced on the Wynn Al Marjan Island. The resort will be situated on a manmade promontory off Ras Al-Khaimah, one of the UAE’s seven emirates. With 1,500 rooms, 24 dining and lounge areas, spa facilities, high-end shopping options, and nightly laser and light shows, the resort promises to offer a luxurious experience to its guests. The opening date has been revised to early 2027, slightly later than the previously projected year of 2026.Artist impressions of the site portray a striking brown-gold high-rise building overlooking a beautiful beach area and circular marina. The lobby is depicted as lavishly furnished, reflecting the resort’s commitment to providing a top-notch experience for visitors. Wynn Resorts CEO Craig Billings expressed the company’s dedication to careful planning and consideration of the unique location of Wynn Al Marjan Island during the past year. While the statement did not provide detailed information about the resort’s gaming facilities, it is expected that Wynn Resorts will offer a range of entertainment options in line with UAE regulations. Further details regarding the gaming aspects of the resort were not immediately available from Wynn Resorts or Ras Al-Khaimah’s media office. The UAE, with a population that is 90% foreign, has been actively pursuing a series of liberalizing reforms to attract talent and boost tourism in the face of increased competition from neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Alongside lifting the ban on unmarried couples living together, relaxing restrictions on alcohol, and offering long-term residencies, the UAE also introduced a Saturday-Sunday weekend last year. This move aligned the country with Western countries and markets, but made it the only Gulf nation not observing weekends on Friday, the Muslim day of prayer.Wynn Resorts’ announcement marks a significant development in the UAE’s tourism and hospitality industry. By introducing the concept of a gaming resort, the country aims to diversify its offerings and attract a broader range of visitors. As the project progresses, the resort is likely to contribute to the growing reputation of the UAE as a premier destination for luxury and entertainment.Overall, the unveiling of the Wynn Al Marjan Island project showcases the UAE’s commitment to embracing change and adapting to evolving market demands. With its innovative approach and dedication to providing exceptional experiences, Wynn Resorts aims to make a lasting impact on the UAE’s tourism landscape.
