Cannons became a Ramadan tradition in the United Arab Emirates in the 1960s. Midfa al iftar cannons are often fired at sunset to indicate the end of the day’s fasting. The firing of these Ramadan cannons is a time-honored tradition that dates back to the 1960s in the UAE. Each day a single shot is fired from each cannon to mark the end of the daily fast. Last year, five of these were stationed in Dubai, and the police have 11 cannons that they move about. When it comes to protocol, four cops should be present when firing. According to the National News, two officers will man the cannon, one loading it and the other passing the blank cartridge.
