WGES advocates for actualizing the green economy and achieving net zero
The World Green Economy Summit (WGES) has emerged as a powerful force in advocating for the realization of the green economy and the achievement of net-zero emissions. Since its inception in 2014, WGES has played a pivotal role in promoting sustainable development, mobilizing global efforts to combat climate change, and fostering international collaboration towards a greener future. With its influential platform and unwavering commitment to sustainability, WGES has become a leading global event in the field of green economy, driving innovation and inspiring transformative change.
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, WGES is organized annually by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), the World Green Economy Organization, and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. This prestigious gathering convenes thought leaders, government officials, corporate leaders, sustainability funders, and experts from various sectors worldwide, fostering knowledge exchange, exploring best practices, and advancing the green economy agenda.
WGES serves as a staunch supporter of the relentless efforts undertaken by the UAE and the global community in embracing innovative green solutions and fostering sustainable development while striking a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation. By aligning with the Paris Agreement on climate change and working towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, WGES is instrumental in shaping a sustainable future that transforms challenges into opportunities.
“The forward-looking vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to position the UAE as a global role model for sustainable and environmentally friendly growth is strongly supported by WGES,” emphasized Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, CEO of DEWA, and Chairman of the World Green Economy Organization. He further emphasized the importance of WGES as a platform for policy discussion, initiative adoption, and international collaboration among business leaders and experts from both public and private sectors.
One of the key objectives of WGES is to position Dubai as a hub for the green economy and facilitate the realization of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These ambitious initiatives aim to generate 100% of Dubai’s total power production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. As the UAE celebrates the Year of Sustainability and prepares for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), WGES is poised to galvanize global efforts in combating climate change.
By fostering international cooperation and partnerships, WGES promotes sustainable development and investments in the green economy. The summit serves as a catalyst for the adoption of effective policies, plans, and initiatives, while empowering all stakeholders worldwide. WGES not only provides a platform for discussions and knowledge sharing but also encourages the exploration of new approaches and more efficient mechanisms to drive the green economy agenda forward.
Waleed Bin Salman, Vice Chairman of the World Green Economy Organization, highlighted the strategic importance of WGES in addressing global challenges, promoting sustainable development, and nurturing investments in the green economy. He emphasized the significance of establishing partnerships between governments, businesses, and civil society to collectively address the urgent need for a sustainable future. Additionally, WGES places a strong emphasis on engaging young people and empowering them to actively contribute to achieving sustainability goals.
Over the years, WGES has achieved remarkable milestones and made significant contributions to the global sustainability agenda. Each edition of the summit focuses on critical issues such as energy, finance, food security, carbon emissions reduction, youth engagement, innovation, and green economy policies. It provides a platform for exchanging best practices, showcasing innovative solutions, and exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of the green economy.
