UAE: 3 Emirati sisters develop AI project, win award at university

Three Emirati sisters have created an innovative project that uses artificial intelligence to simulate chemical and optical processes in the atmosphere. The project aims to better understand the impact of chemicals on the development of genetic diseases.
The project was created by Aisha Al Esayi, from the College of Engineering – majoring in chemical engineering and having a master’s degree in engineering management, Sarah Al Esayi, from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Al Yazia Al Esayi, from the Department of Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering. The sisters used AI to analyze large amounts of data on atmospheric chemistry and optical processes to develop a model that can simulate these processes and their impact on human health.
Their research focused on understanding the impact of atmospheric pollutants, such as nitrogen dioxide and ozone, on the development of genetic diseases. The AI model they developed can predict the extent of the impact of these chemicals on human health by analyzing the chemical reactions that occur in the atmosphere.
One of the sisters, Aisha Al Esayi, the team leader, said that the team developed the project idea through the integration of their different academic disciplines, involving health and engineering sciences, with the aim of investigating the challenges that affect the environment and society. The project, at the same time supports the decision-makers to take appropriate measures.
“A scientific simulation was conducted using artificial intelligence to assess the impacts on medical factors and the health of individuals. The research indicated the high prevalence of autism as one of the negative effects, especially in genetic diseases through the high proportion of nitrogen and carbon in atmosphere, and the extent of effects on the workers in industrial areas,” she said.
The Al Esayi sisters’ project was recognized at the annual Think Science competition, which is organized by the Emirates Foundation and aims to promote scientific innovation and research among youth in the UAE.
Speaking about their project, Sarah Al Esayi said, “We were inspired to create this project because we wanted to better understand the impact of atmospheric pollutants on human health. We used AI to develop a model that can simulate chemical and optical processes in the atmosphere, and we hope our research will contribute to the development of solutions to address this important issue.”
Yazia Al Esayi added, “We are honored to have been recognized at the Think Science competition. Our project is an example of how AI can be used to address important societal issues and make a positive impact on people’s lives.”
The Al Esayi sisters’ project is a clear example of the UAE’s commitment to fostering innovation and developing a strong foundation for the growth of emerging technologies. The country has been actively promoting the development of AI and other technologies, recognizing their potential to transform key sectors in the country, including healthcare, education, and transportation.
The success of the Al Esayi sisters’ project is also a testament to the potential of youth-led innovation in the UAE. The country has a vibrant and rapidly growing tech ecosystem, with a range of initiatives aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.
The Al Esayi sisters’ project is an excellent example of how AI can be used to address important societal issues and make a positive impact on people’s lives. Their use of AI to simulate chemical and optical processes in the atmosphere highlights the potential of this technology to better understand the impact of atmospheric pollutants on human health. Their project is also a testament to the UAE’s commitment to fostering innovation and developing a strong foundation for the growth of emerging technologies.
