The Muslim Council of Elders, headed by His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, has emphasized that Islam is a religion of peace and mercy, based on the principles of tolerance and compassion. In recognition of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, the Council stated that Islam’s teachings uphold values that encourage coexistence and promote human fraternity, irrespective of background.
Furthermore, the Council highlighted that Islamophobia has a detrimental impact on integration and coexistence, as it leads to the spread of false information about Islam and creates a sense of resentment, hate, and racism towards Muslims. To address this issue, the Council called on international organizations and media outlets to fight against Islamophobia to prevent the transgressions that have been occurring against Muslims in the West in recent years.
The Council commended the adoption of March 15th as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia and praised the support of the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres for the cause. He affirmed that Islam’s message, which dates back over 1,400 years, was one of peace, sympathy, and compassion and served as an inspiration to people worldwide. The word “Islam” comes from the same root as the word “peace,” he explained.
