Google, one of the world’s leading technology companies, has announced its collaboration with various organizations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to advance artificial intelligence (AI) research and promote sustainability efforts. This partnership involves key entities such as the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, and the Ministry of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications.

The exciting announcement took place at the MBZUAI campus, where the company unveiled three significant initiatives aimed at driving innovation and addressing pressing societal challenges.

Firstly, the company will provide research awards to faculty members at MBZUAI, with a specific emphasis on enhancing the representation of the Arabic language in AI foundation models. These models will focus on sustainability and the societal impact of climate change. Through financial support and resources such as cloud computing, data analytics, and machine learning, Google aims to empower MBZUAI faculty to conduct cutting-edge research. Additionally, this collaboration will foster knowledge exchange and collaboration opportunities between MBZUAI and Google researchers and engineers.

Secondly, in partnership with the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, Google will introduce “Project Green Light.” This initiative leverages machine learning technology to optimize traffic lights at intersections, with the ultimate goal of reducing stop-and-go traffic that contributes to pollution in urban areas. By analyzing traffic patterns and providing intelligent recommendations for traffic plan modifications, such as adjusting green time during specific hours, congestion and greenhouse gas emissions can be minimized. This innovative approach promises to improve traffic flow and enhance air quality within the city.

Lastly, Google, in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, will organize the “AI Majlis Series.” These quarterly private Majlis sessions will serve as platforms for leaders from Google, the government, academia, and business sectors in the UAE to convene and discuss AI principles and policies. The inaugural AI Majlis will focus on responsible innovation and will feature distinguished figures such as Omar Al Olama, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in the UAE, and Karan Bhatia, Global Vice President of Public Policy and Government Relations at Google.

The partnership between Google and these UAE organizations underscores the commitment to advancing AI research and sustainable practices. By collaborating on research, technology implementation, and policy development, the aim is to drive positive change and foster innovation in the UAE’s technological landscape.

The involvement of prominent figures, such as Omar Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in the UAE, and Karan Bhatia, global VP of Public Policy and Government Relations at Google, underscores the significance of the AI Majlis Series and the commitment of both Google and the UAE government to driving responsible innovation.

By combining the expertise and resources of Google with the local knowledge and networks of UAE organizations, this partnership has the potential to drive transformative change in the fields of AI research and sustainability. The collaboration will not only benefit the UAE but also contribute to global knowledge and best practices in these areas.

Through their joint efforts, Google and UAE organizations are paving the way for a future where AI technologies are harnessed for positive societal impact and sustainable development. The partnership represents a powerful synergy between global technological expertise and local insights, showcasing the potential for collaboration to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

This alliance not only reinforces the UAE’s reputation as a hub for technological advancement but also highlights Google’s dedication to working hand in hand with local entities to create a sustainable and AI-driven future.
