David Byrne, Ryan Lott, and Mitski have won the award for best song written and/or recorded for a film for their Oscar-nominated original song “This Is a Life,” which featured in the movie “Everything Everywhere all at Once.”

The 13th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards took place on April 11, 2021, to honor the best music supervisors in the film, television, and gaming industries. The virtual event was hosted by actor-comedian T.J. Miller and featured performances by a number of artists, including Andra Day and Christina Aguilera.

Two of the big winners of the night were the movie “Elvis” and the Netflix hit series “Stranger Things.” “Elvis” won the award for Best Music Supervision for a Film Budgeted Over $25 Million, while “Stranger Things” won the award for Best Music Supervision for a Television Drama.

“Elvis” tells the story of the legendary musician’s rise to fame and features a soundtrack full of classic rock and roll hits from the ’50s and ’60s. The film’s music supervisor, Susan Jacobs, was praised for her work in curating the soundtrack and bringing the era to life on the big screen.

“Stranger Things,” on the other hand, has become known for its use of ’80s pop hits to create a nostalgic atmosphere that is integral to the show’s appeal. The show’s music supervisor, Nora Felder, was recognized for her work in selecting and placing the music that has become so iconic to the series.

Other winners of the night included the films “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” as well as the TV series “High Fidelity” and “The Queen’s Gambit.” The awards ceremony also featured a tribute to music supervisor Joel C. High, who passed away in 2020.

The Guild of Music Supervisors was founded in 2010 to recognize the contributions of music supervisors to the entertainment industry. Music supervisors are responsible for selecting and placing music in films, television shows, and video games, and play a critical role in shaping the overall mood and tone of a production.

The annual awards ceremony has become a major event in the industry, with music supervisors from around the world coming together to celebrate their achievements and recognize the work of their peers. This year’s virtual event was a testament to the resilience of the industry in the face of the pandemic and demonstrated the importance of music in bringing people together, even in the most challenging of times.
