Abu Dhabi, Aug 03, 2023 – In a significant move to strengthen the integration of UAE national values and the use of the Arabic language among Emirati students, the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has released the results of its inaugural National Identity Mark evaluations. This annual school rating system aims to recognize and celebrate schools that excel in promoting UAE identity and values within their curricula. Out of the 87 schools inspected, eight private institutions stood out for their outstanding efforts in this regard.

The National Identity Mark initiative, unveiled by ADEK in May, represents a pioneering step in enhancing the cultural, linguistic, and citizenship aspects of education in Abu Dhabi. The results of these evaluations were revealed on Thursday, shining a spotlight on the institutions that have made commendable contributions to fostering national identity among students.

Leading Schools in Promoting National Identity

Among the standout performers, eight Abu Dhabi private schools have earned the distinguished “outstanding” rating for their exceptional work in integrating core Emirati values and the Arabic language into their educational framework. These institutions are:

  1. The British International School Abu Dhabi
  2. Sheikh Zayed Academy for Girls
  3. Sheikh Zayed Academy for Boys
  4. Emirates National Schools, MBZ City
  5. Al Ittihad National Private School, Khalifa City
  6. Al Ittihad National Private School, Shakhbout City
  7. Emirates National Schools, Branch 3
  8. Adnoc Schools, Sas Al Nakhl

These schools, recognized for their dedication to promoting UAE culture, heritage, and linguistic identity, have set a high standard for others to follow.

Three Pillars of Evaluation

The National Identity Mark evaluations are structured around three fundamental principles: culture, values, and citizenship. Within these categories, schools are assessed on various criteria that encapsulate the essence of promoting national identity.

  • The culture category encompasses history, heritage, and the significant emphasis on the Arabic language.
  • The values section centers on values such as respect, compassion, and global understanding.
  • The citizenship aspect delves into topics like a sense of belonging, volunteering, and conservation.

Future Outlook and Continuing Evaluation

While these evaluations mark an important milestone, they are by no means the end of the journey. ADEK’s commitment to promoting UAE identity within the education system remains unwavering. Teams from ADEK will revisit the 87 schools throughout the upcoming academic year (2023-2024) to monitor their progress and offer recommendations for improvements.

The next round of inspections will occur during the next school year, ensuring a continuous effort to enhance the quality of education and the incorporation of UAE identity into the learning experience.

Empowering Future Generations with National Pride

Sara Musallam, the Minister of State for Early Education and Chairwoman of ADEK, underlined the significance of the National Identity Mark initiative. She emphasized its role in fostering a strong national identity among Emirati students and its contribution to their understanding of their culture and heritage.

The integration of national identity within education is of paramount importance to parents and guardians, as it instills a sense of belonging and pride in their children. By reinforcing this aspect through educational programs, schools play a vital role in nurturing individuals who are deeply connected to their Emirati identity. This, in turn, empowers students to represent Abu Dhabi and the UAE positively on a global scale.

The National Identity Mark not only enhances transparency and accountability within the education sector but also equips parents with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their children’s education. As the UAE continues to prioritize the holistic development of its citizens, initiatives like these underscore the nation’s dedication to cultivating a well-rounded and proud generation.
