Dubai- The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) and Dubai Municipality have recently solidified their commitment to the development of drone technology and infrastructure through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed for the groundbreaking Dubai Horizons project. This collaborative effort will focus on planning drone flight routes and identifying suitable landing sites throughout the emirate.

The MoU signifies a significant step forward in the advancement of drone technology and its integration into Dubai’s urban landscape. By combining their respective expertise, the DCAA and Dubai Municipality aim to establish a comprehensive framework for managing drone operations and fostering innovation in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sector.

The agreement underscores Dubai’s commitment to strengthening its infrastructure and positioning itself as a leading global urban economy. The Dubai Horizons project aligns with the ambitious goals outlined in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, aiming to streamline plans and develop essential infrastructure to support the growth of new drone technologies.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of DCAA, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, emphasized Dubai’s dedication to enhancing vital sectors and fortifying its status as a global economic powerhouse. He stated, “Dubai is committed to constantly strengthening its infrastructure in vital sectors to raise its status as one of the world’s top urban economies in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. As part of this, the Dubai Horizons project seeks to create a streamlined plan and infrastructure for the development of new drone technologies.”

Through this collaboration, the DCAA and Dubai Municipality will harness their combined expertise in creating geospatial data and their knowledge of the UAV sector to establish efficient flight routes and identify suitable landing sites across Dubai. The use of accurate geospatial data will enable the safe and seamless integration of drones into the city’s airspace, while simultaneously adhering to stringent safety and security protocols.

The Dubai Horizons project aims to address various challenges associated with the rapid growth of the drone industry. By establishing designated flight corridors and landing zones, the project seeks to prevent conflicts between drones and manned aircraft, enhance operational efficiency, and facilitate the integration of emerging technologies like delivery drones and autonomous aerial vehicles.
