DIEZ has revealed outstanding accomplishments in sustainability throughout the year 2022.
Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ) has made remarkable strides in sustainability throughout the year 2022, showcasing its unwavering dedication to sustainable practices and its endeavors to reduce carbon emissions. The authority has implemented responsible measures in line with ISO 50001 international standards for efficient energy utilization and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.
These initiatives align with the UAE’s commitment to sustainable development, renewable energy infrastructure investment, and energy efficiency enhancement under the guidance of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The UAE has declared 2023 as the Year of Sustainability, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to a sustainable future.
DIEZ’s sustainability commitment has yielded significant achievements, including a commendable 24 percent reduction in carbon emissions and a remarkable 46 percent enhancement in the performance of the smart waste management system compared to the previous year.
These accomplishments are a direct result of the implementation of environmentally responsible initiatives and the utilization of cutting-edge sustainable and smart technologies. These efforts have played a pivotal role in reducing electrical energy consumption and effectively managing cooling, irrigation, and waste recycling systems.
Among the innovative initiatives introduced by DIEZ in 2022 is the deployment of integrated building management systems powered by artificial intelligence solutions. These systems monitor and control various building systems, integrating them into centralized databases for efficient management.
DIEZ has also adopted an effective demand flow control system for cooling services and implemented the green gas cooling system (407 R/410) to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact. Furthermore, the authority has replaced traditional lighting in offices and buildings with energy-saving LED lamps, contributing to significant energy savings. In street lighting, the transition from halogen lamps to LED technology has been instrumental in reducing energy consumption.
To address waste management challenges, DIEZ has embraced smart waste management practices, resulting in reduced transportation costs, operational expenses, and carbon footprint. The authority has expanded the number of waste recycling centers to 50, promoting sustainable waste management practices throughout its economic zones.
DIEZ has also prioritized water conservation by implementing innovative strategies. The utilization of greywater for cooling tower temperature control and the adoption of a smart irrigation system have collectively led to a 60 percent reduction in water consumption compared to conventional methods.
Muammar Al Katheeri, Chief Officer Engineering & Smart City at Dubai Integrated Economic Zone, expressed pride in DIEZ’s achievements, highlighting the authority’s commitment to sustainability standards and corporate sustainability. These remarkable results align with DIEZ’s ongoing efforts to bolster Dubai’s economic growth, enhance its competitiveness, attract foreign direct investment, and foster a thriving business environment.
Aligned with the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative, DIEZ’s exceptional sustainability achievements contribute to the nation’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and solidify the UAE’s position as an attractive destination for vibrant and prosperous communities.
As the UAE embraces the Year of Sustainability, declared by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, DIEZ remains steadfast in its pursuit of objectives. The authority will continue cultivating an enabling business environment, safeguarding natural resources, and striving for operational excellence to shape a brighter and more prosperous future for all.
