Borouge reaffirms its dedication to sustainability by enhancing its commitment to Operation Clean Sweep.
Borouge Plc (Borouge), a leading petrochemical company, has recently joined Operation Clean Sweep (OCS), a global initiative aimed at reducing pellet loss in the petrochemical industry and preventing its impact on the environment.
Operation Clean Sweep focuses on implementing procedures to prevent the loss of resin pellets, flakes, and powder during production, transportation, and usage. The goal is to ensure that these materials do not enter the marine environment. The initiative has gained significant support from major petrochemical players worldwide and is currently operational in over 60 countries. In the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, the initiative is led by the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA).
Maitha Al Marashi, Acting Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Borouge, expressed the company’s commitment to sustainability through its participation in Operation Clean Sweep. By joining the initiative, Borouge aims to further strengthen its efforts towards sustainable manufacturing and operations. The company sees this step as a significant milestone in its sustainability roadmap and is dedicated to driving various sustainability initiatives throughout its facilities.
Members of the Operation Clean Sweep program adhere to a comprehensive framework designed to enhance efficiencies in transportation, logistics, industrial operations, and manufacturing. The primary objective is to prevent the unintentional spillage of pellets into the environment, thus avoiding any adverse impact on wildlife and natural ecosystems. Additionally, the program prioritizes employee health and safety by equipping them with extensive knowledge, systems, and processes to prevent potential pellet spillages.
Borouge’s commitment to Operation Clean Sweep comes at a significant time, as it coincides with World Oceans Day—an international observance focused on raising awareness about global efforts to protect the Earth’s oceans and climate. By joining OCS, Borouge reinforces its dedication to environmental stewardship and recognizes the importance of addressing the challenges faced by marine ecosystems.
The company also aligns itself with the Responsible Care initiative, as Borouge is a Responsible Care company driven by the expectations of its customers and consumers. The Responsible Care Global Charter, launched in 1985 under the guidance of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), serves as the chemical industry’s voluntary global initiative. Through this initiative, companies, working alongside their national associations, continuously strive to improve health, safety, and environmental performance across the entire value chain.
Borouge’s participation in Operation Clean Sweep and its commitment to Responsible Care exemplify its proactive approach to sustainable practices and responsible business conduct. By implementing measures to prevent pellet loss and spillages, the company demonstrates its dedication to minimizing its environmental footprint and protecting marine ecosystems.
As Borouge moves forward as a member of Operation Clean Sweep, it will continue to prioritize sustainability and actively contribute to a more responsible and environmentally conscious petrochemical industry. The company’s efforts serve as an inspiration to others in the industry to adopt similar measures, promoting a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.
