Al Ain Distribution Company (AADC), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), has successfully completed a significant water savings project by retrofitting mosques across the Al Ain region, saving nearly 1.8 million cubic meters of water from January 2021 to date. This accounts for approximately one-third of the total annual consumption in 999 mosques and aligns with the UAE’s strategy to conserve resources and rationalize water usage.
Working in collaboration with the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (AWQAF), AADC deployed a team of demand side management specialists and engineers to replace more than 13,400 water fixtures with high-efficiency units throughout 2020. The outcomes of the retrofit project were evaluated by an independent third-party assessor to validate the achieved savings.
Abdullah Ali Al Sheryani, the CEO of AADC, emphasized the importance of responsible water usage in maintaining water security and achieving sustainability goals. He stated that the water-saving measures implemented in nearly 1,000 mosques have resulted in significant water conservation equivalent to filling over 700 Olympic-size swimming pools. Al Sheryani expressed pride in this accomplishment and its impact on promoting sustainability within the community.
The long-term benefits of the retrofitting project are projected to save approximately eight million cubic meters of water over the next decade. This initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s Demand Side Management (DSM) and Energy Rationalization Strategy, which aims to reduce overall water consumption by 32 percent in the emirate by 2030.
