The GDP of Sharjah saw a growth of 5.2% in 2022.
The Department of Statistics and Community Development (DSCD) reported that Sharjah’s economy saw significant growth in 2022, achieving a 5.2% increase in GDP to reach AED 136.9 billion, compared to AED 130.1 billion in 2021. This growth is attributed to the emirate’s development strategy and plans, which include the diversification and integration of its sectors.
The preliminary estimates were based on a comprehensive economic survey from 2017-2021, including all independent bodies and the public sector, using internationally recognized methodologies and classifications. The results reflect the economic indicators of activities and economic sectors in Sharjah for 2022.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Chairman of DSCD, emphasized the importance of providing accurate and reliable data and statistics to support decision-making, planning, and development in various fields. He also stated that the economic diversification of Sharjah has been a driving force behind the current growth in the emirate, aligning with the emirate’s development plans.
Wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, achieved the highest growth in Sharjah’s GDP, reaching AED 32.9 billion, followed by manufacturing, which reached AED 22.9 billion. Accommodation and food service activities had the highest growth rate at 18%, attributed to the increasing demand for these services as the health and tourism realities improved.
Other economic sectors that contributed to Sharjah’s GDP include human health and social work activities, public administration and defence, compulsory social security, agriculture, forestry, and fishing, electricity, gas, and water supply, waste management activities, and wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.
The initial estimates were based on a comprehensive economic survey conducted between 2017 and 2021, which included all independent bodies and the public sector, using internationally recognized methodologies and classifications. These results represent the economic indicators of activities and economic sectors in Sharjah for the year 2022.

The wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, saw the highest growth in Sharjah’s GDP, reaching AED 32.9 billion, followed by manufacturing, which reached AED 22.9 billion. Accommodation and food service activities witnessed the highest growth rate at 18%, attributable to the rising demand for these services as the health and tourism sectors improved.
Apart from these, other economic sectors that contributed to Sharjah’s GDP include human health and social work activities, public administration and defence, compulsory social security, agriculture, forestry, and fishing, electricity, gas, and water supply, waste management activities, and wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.
Wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, topped the list of the highest contribution to Sharjah’s GDP in 2022, registering 24%. Manufacturing activities came in second place with 16.7%, and real estate activities ranked third with 9.7%. The construction sector contributed 9% of the emirate’s total GDP, while public administration and defence, compulsory social security ranked fifth with 7.5%.
The DSCD is responsible for implementing all statistical work in Sharjah, including technical supervision of the statistical sector, designing and implementing field surveys, conducting statistical studies and research, analyzing data and information, and all documentation and preservation of statistical information.
Overall, the preliminary estimates indicate a positive economic performance in Sharjah in 2022, with the growth of various economic sectors, highlighting the emirate’s efforts to achieve sustainable and comprehensive development in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed AlQasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
