Enhanced cooperation planned between National Centre of Meteorology and China Meteorological Administration
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) in the UAE and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to enhance collaboration in meteorological science and technology and reduce the economic loss caused by meteorological disasters. The MoC was signed by Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director-General of NCM, and President of the Regional Association II (Asia), and Li Jian, Engineer-in-Chief of CMA at a ceremony held in Abu Dhabi on the sidelines of the Regional Conference (RECO) of WMO’s Regional Association II (Asia). The four-day conference is hosted by NCM from 13th to 16th March 2023.
Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous called this MoC a crucial milestone in strengthening the collaboration in meteorology. He added that this agreement would enable them to share their knowledge and practices, and work together to enhance the capabilities of their human capital in the latest technologies in meteorological observation and forecasting. He further stated that this collaboration aligns with NCM’s priority of delivering better weather forecasting and meteorological services for the benefit of the communities.
Li Jian, Engineer-in-Chief of CMA, expressed that this collaboration has immense potential to yield positive results for both countries, especially in the areas of meteorological services, weather forecasting, and disaster management. He said that this agreement demonstrated their shared commitment to developing more robust and resilient meteorological systems in both countries, while promoting innovation and collaboration to keep up with the latest advancements in meteorological research and technologies.
The scope of cooperation under the Memorandum includes weather modification technology; FengYun Meteorological Satellite monitoring and remote-sensing applications; weather forecast and exchange of meteorological information; and technical exchange on meteorological telecommunication. The agreement also covers cooperation in climate monitoring, prediction and research on climate change, meteorological observation, and instruments, and AI technology in meteorology, among others.
The two sides agreed to continue their cooperation mechanism by exchanging visits of staff and experts, cooperating in scientific research or experimental programs, jointly organizing seminars, workshops, and lectures, and encouraging other areas of cooperation agreed upon through consultation between both sides.
This agreement marks another significant milestone in the cooperation between the UAE and China, demonstrating their commitment to addressing common challenges and advancing common goals. The collaboration between NCM and CMA is expected to enhance the quality of meteorological services, improve forecasting accuracy, and reduce the impact of meteorological disasters, ultimately benefiting the societies of both countries. It also provides a framework for future collaborations in meteorology and related fields, fostering innovation, and knowledge-sharing.
